A polished concrete floor in Geelong was a key feature of this residential project completed for North Building Group. The brief called for a high-gloss mechanical polish with full aggregate exposure, creating a distinctive finished floor that complements the light-filled interior. By beginning the concrete polishing process early in the build and returning at plaster stage, our team was able to coordinate the flooring with the wider construction program.
Creating a full-exposure polished concrete floor in Geelong
Achieving the requested finish began with the first-stage pre-grind. Our team ground the concrete to expose the aggregate to a full-exposure level, revealing the stone throughout the surface. The floor was then progressively ground and refined before grouting and densifying. Concrete densifier, or concrete hardener, strengthens the surface as part of the mechanical polishing system and prepares it for the subsequent polishing stages.
Importantly, this work was coordinated around the other trades. Once the initial grinding, refining, grouting and densifying were complete, the floor was ready for construction work to continue above it.
Off-white concrete with full aggregate exposure
The concrete selected for the project was the Pegasus mix from Holcim/Geostone. Its off-white concrete base works particularly well with the full aggregate exposure, producing a lighter floor with natural variation from the exposed stone.
The finished surface also complements the home’s white architectural elements and extensive glazing. With natural light entering through the large windows and doors, the high-gloss finish creates noticeable reflections across the floor while allowing the exposed aggregate to remain a prominent design feature.
Mechanical polishing with specialist Husqvarna equipment
For the mechanical polishing process, we used a Husqvarna 690 remote-control grinder together with Husqvarna three-phase vacuum equipment. These professional concrete grinding and dust-extraction systems supported the controlled preparation and refinement required across the large floor area.
Our team returned at plaster stage to complete the mechanical polish to the specified high-gloss finish. The process concluded with the final buff, bringing out the clarity, reflectivity and character of the fully exposed aggregate.
This staged approach is particularly valuable on new builds. Completing the appropriate preparation early allows other trades to progress before the concrete polishing team returns at the planned construction stage. Breathable floor protection can then be used to help protect the finished surface while remaining works continue.
